My name is Humphrey Pedha. I am the Founder and coordinator for the Penda Kenya Initiative (PKI).
St. Paul’s writing to Titus tells him “People must learn to devote themselves to doing good in order that they may provide for daily necessities and not live unproductive life. “This applies very much to our goals.
Dismayed by the escalating unemployment scourge in Kenya, I have been since lobbying and advocating for self-employment creation. By next year, over 15 million Kenyans will be virtually unemployed. Annually, 500,000 qualified Kenyans join the world of unemployment. Another 400,000 young Kenyans complete primary and secondary level of education and miss jobs opportunities.
The struggle by Kenyans to escape from the scams and slime of the slum in search of a decent living is often frustrated by pandemic, systematic vicious circle of economic backwardness.
It is always painful for a young girl or boy to go home only to be welcomed by an empty plate or to walk to school barefoot, or never to attend school at all just because our families are poor. Still disturbing, to see dear young girl child take to prostitution or early marriage, or see a young friend reduced to a zombie by drugs or hear crime has led them in jail. This is a common occurrence in Kenya. The major cause for the same is lack of employment among the people in Kenya. The job market is fully bloated and saturated!!!
Less than 25% of the young people who graduate from the country’s education institution annually, get absorbed into both formal and informal employment. Compounded by the level of poverty in the country, 65% of the population lives below the poverty line (earning less than 1 dollar a day).
The majority of Kenyans who are not only disadvantaged owing to their socio-economic background but are also affected by lack of educational opportunities, which would give them a head start in the competition for the few employment opportunities. Young people are mostly affected and face the blunt of unemployment. Among the impediments many people face in Kenya include:
This is normally indicated by:
Appreciating that religious, social, economic, and education advancement is a cardinal obligation to the individual and societal development; I decided to mobilize fellow men and women who decided to take up the responsibility of determination our destiny through our own destiny by starting our own initiatives and experiences. We work in the line with Christian tenets.
